Academic Programs

The UA College of Engineering offers four-year curricula leading to bachelor of science degrees in engineering. Except for the new biomedical engineering program, all are accredited by the Accreditation Commission of ABET, Inc., the recognized accreditor of college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology.  ABET accreditation demonstrates a program’s commitment to providing its students with a quality education. The UA Engineering Biomedical Engineering program will be eligible for accreditation when it graduates its first class, circa May 2013.

The UA College of Engineering also provides online distance learning opportunities for master’s degree programs, certificate programs and distance continuing education (CEU) courses. Details of the Online Distance Learning program can be found here.

Bachelor of Science in Engineering

• Aerospace Engineering
  
  • The design, manufacture and operation of airplanes and spacecraft.
• Biomedical Engineering
  • Combines the design and problem-solving skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences to improve medical diagnosis and treatment.
• Biosystems Engineering*
  • Design systems for the production, processing and use of food, fiber, and biological and biochemical products. Learn about management of water and environmental resources.
• Chemical Engineering
  • Produce materials and energy in a safe and environmentally sound way. Study how to design, develop and construct processes and machinery to convert raw materials into finished materials.
• Civil Engineering
  • Construction, management and maintenance of buildings, bridges, roads, tunnels, dams and power plants. Also learn about water treatment systems, waste disposal systems, and air and water pollution control systems.
• Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • Electrical focus: Study electronics theory and learn to apply the theory to integrated circuits, power generating systems, machinery controls, and computers and electrical systems, such as those found in automobiles and aircraft.
    Computer focus: Learn to design the hardware and software associated with computers and computer systems.
• Engineering Management
  • Knowledge of basic sciences, engineering sciences, and mathematics with business management tools. Specialize in a technical area of your choice, and choose courses relating to an industry or profession that interests you. This major prepares students for management positions with technology-based companies.
• Industrial Engineering
  • Design and implement systems that integrate people, materials, machines, energy and information. Such systems might include production planning, quality assurance, management information, facility planning, inventory control, and workplace design.
• Materials Science and Engineering
  • Materials microstructure, properties and processing and how they relate to the behavior of metals, ceramics, glasses, polymers, semiconductors and composites.
• Mechanical Engineering
  • Design tools, engines, machines and other mechanical equipment. Study the fields of solid and fluid mechanics, thermosciences, dynamics and control, and engineering design.
• Mining Engineering
  • Plan, develop and operate mines, as well as other engineering excavations.
• Optical Sciences and Engineering†
  • Optical design, fabrication and testing and the use of lasers, optical detectors, optical instrumentation, and optical fiber communications.
• Systems Engineering
  • Modeling, analysis and design of technologically advanced systems that integrate machines, people, software, hardware, materials and energy.
