How to Build a Lego Robot

In the Introduction to Engineering course, students get to build Lego robots. This is not your average engineering course, it’s much more hands on and gives students a taste of what engineering will involve after graduation.

2013 SEA Program Options

Session I: June 2-7, 2013

Session I is an interdisciplinary residential program for rising high school freshmen and sophomores.

Session II: June 9-14, 2013

Session II is an interdisciplinary residential program for rising high school juniors and seniors.

Session III: June 16-21, 2013

Session III is an interdisciplinary residential program for rising high school juniors and seniors.

Session IV: June 23-28, 2013

Are you a hands-on person who ever wondered about what the natural world has to offer? The wonder and the world of mining awaits you; be a mining engineer for a week and find out how much fun it can be!

You will be introduced to the first principles of mining engineering, starting with mineral exploration, mine safety procedures, and blasting. Later, you will venture deeper into the subject of mining engineering by learning about the design and operation of a surface mine, an underground mine, and mineral processing.

You will have a chance to receive training in equipment operation and materials handling using a simulator inside a control room similar to the ones found in large-scale mining operations. At the end of the week you will get the unique opportunity to visit and work on design competitions at the San Xavier Mine! This student run, multi-level mine is a great place to test your analytical and design skills. You may even get the chance to participate in a demolitions seminar!

Session V: July 7-12, 2013 (Program Full, Waitlist only)

Are you interested in the Chemistry and Biology side of Engineering? During this session, you will explore the many applications of Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Materials Science & Engineering.

Participate in projects with Biofuels, environmental cleanup, and chemical plant design with the Chemical Engineering Department. You will learn about the sustainability and safety precautions involved in these areas and how they impact our planet.

The Biomedical Engineering portion of the program will investigate how to integrate technology with the human body. You will participate in college level labs designed to help bridge the gap between man and machine.

Look inside the world from a Materials Science & Engineering perspective. See what kind of materials work for different types of situations and environments and then make them yourself. You will get hands on labs for everything from smelting to ceramic design to glass manufacturing.

Session VI: July 14-19, 2013 (Program Full, Waitlist only)

Have you ever wondered about how your smartphone works? All of the electronics you use on a daily basis can be explained by Electrical & Computer Engineering, Optical Science & Engineering, Systems Engineering, and Industrial Engineering. Throughout the week you will reverse engineer the components of these devices.

Electrical & Computer Engineering will focus on the wireless and electronic components of a smartphone. You will learn the basic of wireless networking, securing data transfer, and electrical design. You may even have the chance to work on developing software and apps!

The Optical Sciences and Engineering projects will focus on imaging technology. Find out how cameras, telescopes, and touchscreens work. You will also have the opportunity to work with 3-D optical imaging technology.

Systems and Industrial Engineering puts it all together to show you how complex systems are produced and managed. You will learn about the manufacturing process and how to lead complex teams in industry.

Session VII: July 21-19, 2013 (Program Full, Waitlist only)

Are you interested in designing and building complex machines? The Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Civil Engineering program is your chance to translate your ideas from paper to the real world.

The Aerospace Engineering department will take you through the process of designing an aircraft. You will look at aerodynamic performance, test objects in our subsonic and supersonic wind tunnels, and design flight systems.

Put your design skills to the test with the Mechanical Engineering projects. You will have the chance to hone your 3-D CAD skills to the test and then manufacture your creations using our state-of-the art machine shop.

Civil Engineers are responsible for building the world around us. Find out how they design structures to withstand earthquakes and other factors. You will have the chance to design and build the infrastructure of tomorrow through a wide variety of projects focused on environmentally sustainable design.
