The Challenge

Water, Water Everywhere, or Is It?

Each team of two to five students clearly defines a water-related problem in Arizona and proposes unique engineering strategies to address it. Peers, undergraduates and faculty members provide support and guidance, and professional judges critique the final solutions.

Prizes are awarded for best solution, most innovative solution and best engineering notebook (documentation).

Concerns in the Southwest

Water is essential. Everyone needs it. Water for drinking and personal needs, however, only makes up about 5% of all water consumed. The rest is used for things like sanitation, agriculture, industry, power generation and recreation. Access to clean water is considered one of the global Grand Challenges for Engineering. Importantly, communities throughout Arizona and across the Southwest are not immune to water issues.

Tie-In to Grand Challenges

With input from people around the world, an international group of technological thought leaders identified Grand Challenges for Engineering in the 21st century. The 14 goals for improving life on Earth fall under four themes – Sustainability, Health, Security and Joy of Living.
